Carbon Reduction Plan

Updated April 2022

Commitment to achieving real Science Based Net Zero

The Smithfield Collective is committed to achieving Net Zero emissions by 2030.

Baseline Emissions Footprint

Baseline emissions are a record of the greenhouse gases that have been produced in the past and were produced prior to the introduction of any strategies to reduce emissions. Baseline emissions are the reference point against which emissions reduction can be measured.

Baseline Year: 2018/19 (calendar year)

Current Emissions Reporting

In the year 2020 – 2021 we made significant reductions to our carbon emissions.  During the pandemic we made the strategic decision to switch to remote methods of working for all internal and client meetings and now use home offices, rather than commuting to a shared office space.  These measures have  significantly impacted our carbon emissions.

We intend to continue these working practices going forward, thus maintaining our reduced carbon emissions.  The report below demonstrates the significant reductions we have made to our carbon emissions as a result of changed working practices.

Emissions reduction targets

We are a small business of only 2 employees, both home workers, as such our current carbon emissions are minimal.

In order to continue our progress to achieving Net Zero over the next 5 years we intend to adopt a number of operational strategies and off-setting our carbon emissions where feasible, as outlined below:

Carbon Reduction Initiatives

We have taken the following carbon reduction initiatives and will continue to

  • We have switched our electricity to a renewable energy supplier

  • We avoid printing wherever possible, and print on both sides

  • Work tops, laptops and other equipment are powered down overnight/ not left on standby

  • Implemented a sustainable procurement policy: We always interrogate the sustainability credentials of suppliers and partners and ask that they share their carbon reduction plan with us, where relevant

  • We work with partners/ suppliers that share our own very high and exacting standard

  • When travelling to meetings we only use public transport, where possible

  • We plan to continually monitor our carbon emissions using www.compareyourcarbonfootprint.com

In the future we hope to implement further measures, such as:

  • Improve building insulation and replace gas boiler with renewable heat source.

  • Move all online services to suppliers powered by renewable energy.

  • We have also recently become contributors to Climeworks.  A ‘direct air capture’ scheme that captures carbon dioxide directly from the air.  We will review our membership going forward to ensure it is relevant to our progress towards achieving Net Zero.
